READINGS for further information/exploration

Textiles: Methods, Techniques, Inspiration

Complex Cloth
Jane Dunnewold

Fiber Studio Press, 1996
This book is a fantastic, inspiring introduction to surface design, which includes information, instruction, and hands-on photos of tool-making (stamps, stencils, silkscreens), dyeing, use of fabric paints and discharge agents.

Color by Accident
Ann Johnston

Self-published, 1997
(available from the author)
Low-water immersion dyeing in depth.
(No pun intended!)

Dyes and Paints:
A Hands-on Guide to Coloring Fabric

Elin Noble

Great information, recipes and advice on using fiber-reactive dyes, including color mixing. Fully illustrated and inspiring.

Textile Dyeing
Kate Broughton

Quarry Books, 2001
(earlier edition, 1996)
Takes a fascinating look inside various artists' studios and at their dye processes. Used copies are widely available.

Interaction of Color
Josef Albers

Yale University Press, 1975
A classic treatise on color, full of useful exercises.

Designing & Printing Textiles
June Fish

Crowood Press, 2005
A thorough look at textile design, from pattern development and creating repeated motifs to dye and print methods. Lovely!

Adventures In Stitches
Mariska Karasz

Funk & Wagnalls, 1975
A delightful compendium of embroidery stitches and inspiration, by one of the godmothers of creative embroidery. Worth seeking out.

Celebrating The Stitch: Contemporary Embroidery of North America
Barbara Lee Smith

Taunton, 1991
I treasure this book, which first inspired me to pick up needle and thread and explore stitching beyond Aunt Martha iron-ons. It's not simply a gallery of stitched work, but contains interviews with artists about their creative process, as well as specific techniques. Slightly dated, but still highly valuable if you're interested in stitching.

The Art of Embroidery: Inspirational Stitches, Textures, and Surfaces
Francoise Tellier-Loumagne

Thames & Hudson, 2007
This exciting embroidery book doesn't include the most precise instructions for individual stitches... but so what? The author does a great job of illustrating the leap from inspiration to artwork. Immerse yourself in the color and textures here, and P-L-A-Y with that needle and thread!

Petit Pattern Book Series
Ram Distribution, 2007
This enchanting group of design books is a breath of fresh air in the clip art genre. Each volume includes a CD of patterns in EPS and JPG formats, ready for recoloring and manipulation. It's a hipster design starter kit! Worth the price if that's up your alley.

Creative Inspiration

is an individual thing, and what enlivens me may leave you bored…
but with that said, here are a few books I've relied upon to strike that internal "art spark" and get me going.

Trust the Process
Shaun McNiff

A permission slip for your creative spirit. Detach from the results: luxuriate in the process!!

The War of Art
Steven Pressfield
A concise, insightful, direct guide to kicking your resistance in the rear end and getting down to work. Highly recommended for procrastinators at any stage of their creative career!

Bird by Bird

Anne Lamott

A down-to-earth letter from the creative battlefront. She is a writer, and discusses working with words, but our struggles with inner critics, sloth and motivation are universal. Funny and moving.

Long Quiet Highway
Natalie Goldberg

The autobiography of a writer, writing teacher and Zen student. All of her books have struck a spark with me, and I also recommend Writing Down the Bones, Wild Mind and Thunder and Lightning.

Art & Fear
David Bayles & Ted Orland

"An artist's survival guide, written by and for working artists. The authors explore the way art gets made, the reasons it doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way."
