This popular class is fun, informative, and will empower you to start printing at home, inexpensively, with great results!

Silkscreening seems mysterious and complicated, but it actually can be both simple and fun to make screens and print on fabric and paper.

Students learn to build their own screens and apply surfaces with paint, screen filler and photo emulsion, then use them to print custom images. Everyone leaves class with several screens to use and the skill to print successfully.

Don't limit yourself to commercial fabrics:
make your own original cloth!

In these classes, you'll learn the basics of dyeing with versatile, user-friendly fiber-reactive dyes. Use your new skills to upcycle garments already in your wardrobe, and/or create one-of-a-kind textiles to use in sewing, art and craft projects. You'll leave class with the ability to dye and pattern cloth at home, a notebook of color samples, and fabric to use for your own projects.

6 students per class, three 4-hour classes in each series.

[NOTE: While the dyes and chemicals we work with are very safe, many women choose not to work with dyes during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester. If you're pregnant or planning on it, consult with your doctor before enrolling.]

 

This class introduces students to hands-on dyework with a palette of dye colors. They will dye fabric, experiment with mixing colors to create their own dye hues, and enjoy a “tasting menu” of surface design techniques, including water-soluble resists, direct application of thickened dyes with stamps and stencils, and beginning discharge (removing dye color to create pattern).

Surface Design I is suitable for students at all levels of expertise!
